You have a deadline looming. Instead of getting it done you are doing other frivolous things that can wait. You know how much you have to get done and that you must get started but you just don’t feel like it. Are you battling with the dreaded phenomenon of procrastination?

Procrastination is very dangerous as we squander the very scarce free time that we have and put off important tasks until later. It is a habit that we must all break if we are to achieve the successes that we desire.

Here are some tips to overcome the procrastination disease

Break your work down

If the work is overwhelming break it into more manageable bite size pieces that make it easier to go through.

Detailed plans with clear timelines

Monthly, weekly and daily tasks lists can help to give a sense of urgency to your goals. As you accomplish each daily task there is a sense of fulfillment that comes with this.

A change of environment.

Sometimes a change of environment can make you more productive. Just leave your space for a while. If you must stay in a particular environment you can just change things around and be inspired again.

Do you have the right friends?

The people you spend time with influence your behaviours. Who are the people that motivate you, inspire you, make you perform spend more time with them.

Do you have an accountability partner?

A mutually beneficial relationship in which you both hold each other accountable for your goals is ideal. This spurs you to take action as someone is there to support you.

Do your goals need re-clarifying or adjusting?

If you have been procrastinating for an extended period of time, your goals may no longer be relevant or may need adjusting. Review your goals to ensure that they are still SMART.

Time out

Sometimes you just need some time away from work to get yourself back on track; it could be a day away from home, or a weekend away in solitude away from all distractions, to think through your situation and create a plan to move forward.

Are you a perfectionist?

Sometimes perfectionists over-complicate things with analysis paralysis, waiting for the perfect time to act. There is never a perfect time. Perfectionism is one of the greatest causes of procrastination.

Just do it.

If you don’t do it, it just won’t happen. Whatever it is that you have been putting off for days, weeks, months….even years, you need to get a handle on yourself and get it done.
